City of Heavenly Fire, A Midway Review

For starters, I have to say that I am loving this book. I love the imagery and scenery of the different dimensions. There’s just so much going on in my mind’s eye for Idris, Edom, and the Faerie Court. I love it! I feel like Cassandra Clare has really improved in that area of her writing. I also am loving the ties between this series and the Clockwork series. I can’t wait to find out what happens with Brother Zachariah and Tessa Gray. I think it might be the main reason I have been reading so fast. I JUST WANT TO KNOW ALREADY!

A few things that I’m not crazy about in it are:

1) The Julian and Emma relationship seems like a mirror of Simon and Clary’s friendship. I even feel that their personalities are similar and it feels too copy cat. I wish there had been more of a difference.

2) There seems to be some inconsistencies with Emma’s personality. When she’s talking to Julian she seems more grown up. But Clare has her talking to Clary and Jace as if she is a small child and has no understanding of the things going on around them.

3) Jordan’s abrupt death kind of bothered me. I know this is small but I really wish him and Maia had had some closure at the ending. It’s like Clare didn’t know what to do with him anymore, and she just wanted him out of the picture.

4)The Heavenly Fire conflagration in Edom seemed odd. Like how did Clary just soldier through it? And what happened when she was reaching for her sword? Maybe I will find out more later… And I don’t like how Jace was just giving up in the middle of it. That’s very un-Jacelike.

So far I love everything else though. None of these small things have made me like the book any less. There’s so many good story lines intertwining!

Lirael by Garth Nix

This book was really interesting but a letdown at the same time. I was so excited to read it because I had read Sabriel my last semester of college in my Young Adult Lit class and thought it was the most interesting High Fantasy book I had ever read. Mogget was and still is my favorite character!

However, Lirael fell short of my expectations. I really liked how they did the book tandem with Lirael and Prince Sameth, but the entire book was a climax with no conclusion. There was a twist of some sorts at the end but it never got to the point of the story.

I’m guessing that’s what Abhorsen will be about. I just wish there had been a little bit more in Lirael. It felt like it was missing the ending to the book, and it was a long read on top of that.

I have high hopes for Abhorsen though. And Clariel when it comes out this fall.

Next up: City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare.

Melissa Marr is Awesome!

Melissa Marr sent us these books for free! She sent them to my mom because she is a librarian and she was donating some of her excess copies to libraries, hospitals, and book bloggers. This is so nice and I can’t wait to read these books before they go into my moms library next year. I loved her Wicked Lovely series so I can’t wait to get my hands on Desert Tales. Thank you Melissa Marr!

Writing Niches

I saw an article the other day with pictures of different authors writing desks and offices. I had never even thought about the writing niche as a sacred place. We don’t even have a dining room table in my apartment so when I’m at home most of my writing takes place on the floor at my coffee table.

But I’ve been seeing more and more articles about how the writing niche is important. I don’t think it’s necessary to have a full on desk cluttered with staplers and paperclips and sticky notes like what most people assume about writers desks. I think everyone is different. Sometimes I just want to get out of my house so I go to Corner Bakery or the Starbucks in my local Target to write. I can’t write when it’s really loud and there’s a lot going on around me. However, my best friend works best in multitasking situations. She will write while she’s watching CSI on Netflix or listening to all of Taylor Swift’s albums on iTunes. She is more easily distracted when it’s quiet. She says she gets bored so she starts checking Facebook or her mind starts wandering to other things. To each his own!

I know on author Libba Brays website she use to (and may still) post the soundtracks and albums she listened to while she wrote each book. She says it helps set the mood. I on the other hand, can’t focus like that. I’m a horrible multitasker.

My boyfriend likes his desk very business like. He wants it cleaned off, with cubbies, shelves, and desk organizers. The business/professional atmosphere helps him stay on task and get things done.

Where is your writing niche and what does it look like? Does it say a lot about your personality?

Amazon Prime and Hastings Book Haul

Amazon Prime and Hastings Book Haul

I love Hastings. Love love love it! I use to live by them when I lived in Tyler, TX and San Marcos, TX but there’s not any in Dallas 😦 So whenever I go visit my grandparents in East Texas I stop at the one in Greenville. I bought Lirael there. I read Sabriel for my YA Lit class my last year in college and loved it. They’re just a really good high fantasy series. After buying Lirael I added Abhorsen to my Amazon Prime haul. I think there’s another one too, but it might just be mini stories by Garth Nix. I’ll have to check that out later. And there is a new one coming out, unless it’s already been released and I don’t know about it called Clariel.

I just received my Amazon Prime book haul today. I got to order 5 books since my boyfriend went on a spending spree on the Steam sales for video games. Yay for me!

I love the cover of Seraphina. I have seen it on the bookshelves at Barnes & Noble several times while perusing but I never bought it until now for some reason. I’ve been thinking about the Eragon books a lot lately and maybe that’s why. There’s not enough dragon books coming out anymore.

And I have heard nothing but good things about Angelfall. Every book blog, vlog, and Instagram post I have seen about this book tells me it’s awesome and action packed. It and City of Heavenly Fire are probably my most anticipated of this book haul. Cause come on, everyone loves the mortal instruments.

And lastly, Legend by Marie Lu. I have also just heard some really great things about it and I feel like I see them everywhere. It’s been following me around so I have to give it a shot.
