Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

This book was nothing like I expected. I loved how dark it was. I feel like not many YA authors go that direction in their novels. I understand that many worry about their audience being too young and what not but this was very interesting for a fairytale retelling.

At first I was a little put off by the tone of the novel. It seemed very average. Nothing really stood out with the main character Amy. It seemed like a cliche young adult novel. However, I was instantly sucked into the world of Oz whenever the first character is killed off in the beginning. *I’m trying not to put spoilers if I can help it.*

I also thought Danielle Paige’s writing was somewhat dull in the beginning. As I kept reading though it became more clear that the book is meant to just have a very dry sense of humor about it. It added to the sense of fantasy/ridiculousness of Dorothy’s reign.

My favorite part of the book would definitely be the love story building, or brewing I should say! Nox seemed like a weirdo to me when Paige first described him with his crazy, spiky hair but he grew on me. His attitude reminds me of Greyworm in the Game of Thrones books and movies.

Her rat Star also stood out to me. I like that Paige didn’t give her a cat or a dog. I have a ferret, so the small rodent was relatable to me! I can’t wait for the next book! This series would do well in theatres in my opinion.
