This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.
This afternoon, her planet was invaded.
The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.
Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.
My best friend and I picked this book up just to see what all the hype was about. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. I’m usually not the biggest Sci-Fi fan but I really enjoyed this one! I tried explaining what the book is about to my husband and it sounds really hodg-hodge outloud but Kaufman and kristoff really pull it off. When I was explaining what it was about I found it hard to take serious at first… “Space, zombie virus, and a killer artificial intelligence system..” Yeah…
But I LOVED the main characters. Kady + Ezra forever! Both characters are hilariously witty and sarcastic. I loved seeing them banter back in forth. Their online flirting almost reminded me of Christian Grey and Ana’s from Fifty Shades of Grey.
I hear the second book Gemina is following several different characters. But I want to know what happens with Kady and Ezra and Ezra’s crazy mother!!! Maybe they will be in the background or somewhere in the next book. I think if I have to wait for a whole new book the not knowing is going to kill me.
At the beginning of the book I didn’t like AIDAN but the more you get to know the AI system the more sympathy you have for him (it?). I hope he helps Ezra and Kady fight against Ezra’s mother when it comes down to it and that he doesn’t go crazy again. I’m interested in finding out if the zombie virus will make a reappearance in the next book. I feel like it would have to since it was such a large part in the first one. I always think Bietech will be around more. The problems in the first book are just going to snowball.
I just feel so completely blown out of the water by this one. I am so so so so so impressed by how they pulled off the story so well. If I were to write something this intricate it would be all over the place! But everything goes together so smoothly!
I give this one 5/5. Once you pick it up you won’t be able to put it down! I also have to say, I think this one is a great read for girls and guys. In my opinion, YA generally leans more towards female protagonist, but this one has both which makes it more awesome!
